Potential of AI in Language Education: GPT Models at the Forefront

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become more visible with the introduction of GPT models like ChatGPT. In every corner, you can now see AI-based applications for various purposes. I believe that more than any other field, language education is particularly open to accepting new technological advancements and readily adopts them. In this talk, I will put my critical lenses on and delve into the power of AI, particularly the role of GPT models like ChatGPT, in language education. I will provide an in-depth analysis of the potential of GPT models in language education and how they can enhance teaching and learning experiences through smart prompting. I believe that the attendees of my talk will gain valuable insights into the use of AI in language learning and teaching. We will explore various aspects of AI-driven language education, such as language materials development, language assessment, personalized learning experiences, feedback, and increased learner engagement, enabled by the smart use of ChatGPT. But, is everything on track? Let’s lay the cards on the table. It is not. There are two sides of the story and lot of angles to consider. For this reason, I will also discuss some challenges and potential harms of AI use in language teaching and learning.

Ahmet Basal is an associate professor in the Department of Educational Sciences at Yıldız Technical University in İstanbul, Türkiye. His research publications and interests include instructional technologies, instructional design, online learning, teacher education, language education, curriculum and instruction, and corpus linguistics.
